Anti- Graffiti Organization Welcomes New Laws.
After February the 9th a person caught carrying marker pens or etching implements for the purpose of defacing property will face a fine of $1100
or a three month jail term.
The founder of L.A.G.G.( Locals against graffiti and gangs ) Mr Allan Dabbagh today praised the NSW government for beefing up graffiti laws
“These tougher consequences for graffiti send the message that graffiti is a crime and people who tag public and residential property are behaving illegally, we now know from worldwide research that arrests of perpetrators reduces graffiti crime within a community.”
A potential six month jail term or a fine of $2200 for defacing a property has now been introduced, whilst serious damage to a property can carry a maximum jail term of five years.
NSW Attorney General John Hatzistergos said the tougher laws were the start of a new front in the war on graffiti tags.
Graffiti crime costs NSW more than 100 million a year.
L.A.G.G. was established in January 2009 to confront a growing incidence of graffiti crime in South West Sydney.
