FERNY GROVE: Detectives from Brisbane West District have charged seven juveniles with 150 local graffiti-related charges. And the search continues for vandals responsibl
e for the distinctive graffiti tag “CHOPO”.The four-month joint operation between Brisbane West Criminal Investigation Branch and Queensland Rail focused on vandalism at railway stations and council facilities. Brisbane West Detective Inspector Robert Hytch said the partnership between police and Queensland Rail led to the success of the operation.
“Detectives worked with Queensland Rail to identify and solve a large number of graffiti offences,” Insp Hytch said. “These partnerships are vital because left unchecked, graffiti sends out a message to vandals that residents don’t care what happens in their local community and acts of graffiti can increase, along with other crime and disorderly behaviour.” A 15-year-old Ferny Hills girl was dealt with under the Juvenile Justices Act in relation to an alleged 69 graffiti offences. Also last month a 24-year-old man appeared in the District Court charged with wilful damage by graffiti. Police are now calling for assistance from the public to help identify the vandal responsible for the “CHOPO” tag.
